Seven Young Innovators Represent The STEM Makers at WSRO Regionals 2026

From Young Racers to Precision Engineers: A Journey of Preparation, Competition and Learning

The spirit of engineering came alive as seven students from The STEM Makers, Vijayawada, travelled to Pune to participate in the WSRO Regionals 2026, held on 8th August 2026.

Representing three different age groups and competition categories, the students preparation, experimentation with mechanical design, and practice was put to the test on the competition arena.

The team included a Grade 3 student competing in Junior Robo Race, two students from Grades 5 and 6 competing in Blixathon Robo Sprint, and four students from Grades 10, 11 and 12 competing in Blixathon Robo Precision.

For The STEM Makers, the competition was not simply about winning medals. It was an opportunity for students to experience engineering under real competitive conditions—where designs have to work, strategies have to adapt, and every mistake becomes an opportunity to improve.

 

 

A Strong Performance in Robo Precision

The highlight of the team’s performance came from the Robo Precision team comprising four senior students from Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Competing against 35 teams, the team secured an impressive 3rd position in the preliminary rounds, earning a place in the knockout stage.

 

Reaching the knockouts was a significant achievement, particularly given the level of competition and the technical demands of the event.

Robo Precision requires students to combine multiple engineering disciplines. The team worked extensively on their robot’s:

  • Mechanical structure and drivetrain
  • Lifting mechanism
  • Gripper design
  • Object manipulation
  • Driver-control strategy

The team approached the robot as an evolving engineering system rather than a finished product. Designs were repeatedly tested, weaknesses identified, and mechanisms modified to improve reliability and precision.

The team eventually lost in the knockout rounds, bringing their competition journey to an end. However, their 3rd-place finish in the preliminaries among 35 teams was a strong demonstration of the team’s technical capabilities and preparation.

More importantly, the knockout experience gave the students an opportunity to understand what changes when the pressure increases and that every match counts.

Learning Through Robo Sprint

Two students from Grades 5 and 6 participated in the Blixathon Robo Sprint competition.

Robo Sprint presented the students with the challenge of balancing speed, control and reliability. Their preparation involved repeated practice runs, modifications to the robot, and learning how small mechanical changes could influence overall performance.

For young students, competitions such as these provide a powerful introduction to engineering thinking. They begin to understand that building a robot is only the beginning. The real challenge lies in testing it, identifying problems, and improving it.

Every practice run became an experiment.

Our Youngest Competitor Takes on Junior Robo Race

Representing The STEM Makers in the Junior Robo Race was our youngest participant—a Grade 3 student.

For a young learner, stepping into a competitive robotics arena alongside students from across different schools is itself a significant accomplishment.

The Junior Robo Race encourages children to develop basic robotics skills while navigating a challenging track. It requires concentration, hand-eye coordination, control, and the confidence to operate a robot in a competitive environment.

The experience offered our youngest participant a valuable first-hand introduction to the excitement—and pressure—of robotics competitions.

Preparation: Where the Real Learning Happened

The competition may have lasted only a day, but the learning journey began much earlier.

Preparation at The STEM Makers involved much more than simply assembling robots. Students spent considerable time understanding mechanisms, testing designs, programming, practising driving, analysing failures and making improvements.

The process followed a continuous engineering cycle:

Design → Build → Test → Analyse → Improve → Repeat

A mechanism that worked perfectly during one practice session could behave differently under competition conditions. A robot that moved quickly could become difficult to control. A gripper that worked with one object might fail with another.

Students had to learn to ask the right questions:

Why did it fail?
What can we change?
Will the change make it better?
How can we test it?

This mindset is at the heart of engineering education.

More Than a Competition

Robotics competitions provide students with something that a conventional classroom often cannot fully replicate: the opportunity to apply concepts in an unpredictable, real-world environment.

Students experience firsthand how physics, mathematics, electronics, programming and mechanical engineering come together to solve a problem.

At the same time, they develop skills that are equally important:

  • Persistence when a design fails
  • Collaboration within a team
  • Decision-making under pressure
  • Analytical thinking
  • Time management
  • Communication
  • Adaptability
  • Confidence

The competition arena becomes a classroom without walls.

Celebrating the Journey

The results are certainly worth celebrating—especially the 3rd-place preliminary finish of our Robo Precision team among 35 teams and their qualification for the knockout rounds.

But at The STEM Makers, we believe that the greatest achievement is the growth that happens along the way.

Seven students entered the WSRO Regionals with different levels of experience and different challenges ahead of them. They returned with a deeper understanding of robotics, engineering, competition and, most importantly, themselves as problem-solvers.

For the Robo Precision team, the journey from preparation to 3rd place in preliminaries and qualification for the knockouts demonstrated what disciplined preparation and iterative engineering can achieve.

The knockout loss was not an endpoint—it was another data point in the learning process.

That is the mindset we want our students to carry forward: build boldly, test relentlessly, learn from failure, and keep improving.

The STEM Makers: Building the Next Generation of Problem Solvers

At The STEM Makers, competitions are an extension of our philosophy of learning by doing.

Our goal is not simply to train students to build robots that win competitions. It is to help them become curious learners, creative thinkers and confident problem-solvers who are comfortable taking an idea, turning it into a prototype, testing it in the real world, and improving it through failure.

The WSRO Regionals 2026 was another important milestone in that journey.

Congratulations to all seven students for representing The STEM Makers with enthusiasm, determination and an engineering mindset.

The arena may have closed, but the learning continues.

Design. Build. Test. Learn. Improve.
